OKLAHOMA CITY -- Only one in four Oklahoma public high school students can name the first President of the United States, according to a survey released today.
The survey was commissioned by the Oklahoma Council of Public Affairs in observance of Constitution Day on Thursday.
The Oklahoma City-based group enlisted national research firm, Strategic Vision, to access students' basic civic knowledge.
Brandon Dutcher is with the conservative think tank and said the organization wanted to find out how much civic knowledge Oklahoma high school students know.
"They're questions taken from the actual exam that you have to take to become a U.S. citizen," Dutcher said.
A thousand students were surveyed by telephone and given 10 questions drawn from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services item bank. Candidates for U.S. citizenship must answer six questions correctly in order to become citizens.
About 92 percent of the people who take the citizenship test pass on their first try, according to immigration service data. However, Oklahoma students did not fare as well. Only about 3 percent of the students surveyed would have passed the citizenship test.
Dutcher said this is not just a problem in Oklahoma. He said Arizona had similar results, which left him concerned for the entire country.
"Jefferson later said that a nation can't expect to be ignorant and free," Dutcher said. "It points to a real serious problem. We're not going to remain ignorant and free."

Question and the % of Students Who Answered Correctly
What is the supreme law of the land? 28
What do we call the first ten amendments to the Constitution? 26
What are the two parts of the U.S. Congress? 27
How many justices are there on the Supreme Court? 10
Who wrote the Declaration of Independence? 14
What ocean is on the east coast of the United States? 61
What are the two major political parities in the United States? 43
We elect a U.S. senator for how many years? 11
Who was the first President of the United States? 23
Who is in charge of the executive branch? 29

97% of the high school students surveyed wouldn't have passed the citizenship test. That means that foreigners have more knowledge about American history that our high school kids! What is sad is that we laugh at this and yet I bet most of the people that laugh can't answer these questions either. 86% of the high school students didn't know who authored the Declaration of Independence. This is sickening. What's worse is parents do not seem to care that this is going on.A strong foundation in American history and history in general will ensure that our young people grow up to have a sense of pride and direction. They know what we're about and where we are going. The Bible gives us the true history of the universe, and it is only in light of that history that we can interpret the evidence of the present, explain death and suffering, or offer true answers for the problems of mankind. The history as recorded in the Bible has been attacked by our increasingly secular culture. As a result, recent generations have been brought up to see the Bible as a book that contains many interesting stories and religious teaching but has no connection to reality. When you take that away, you can control them. The problem with American History and just about any history today is that the secular humanists are rewriting our history to leave God and the Bible out of it. This is a great reason why so many are leaving the faith. They have bought into a lie and we as parents and the church have failed to answer their questions concerning the Cristian Worldview. We need to get back to the basics with our children and raise them in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. Let's start right here. I challenge you to answer these questions for yourself and see how well you do. I will provide the answers below, but don't cheat! How well did you do? Are you still laughing? Now that's the Whole Truth!-Joe
